Express Entry vs PNP: How do you decide which oneto apply?

Canada has two main ways of welcoming new permanent residents: the Express Entry system and the Provincial Nominee Programs. These programs are designed to help people who want to live and work in Canada to become permanent residents.

As per the study, in 2024, Canada will welcome 485,000 new immigrants through two different programs. So, if you are thinking about immigrating to Canada, you might be wondering which program to choose: Express Entry or PNP. Both programs have their benefits, so it’s important to understand the differences between them before making a decision.

Let’s find out the difference between a base PNP and an Express Entry.

What is Express Entry?

Canada has an online system to manage all economic immigration programs, allowing immigrants from other countries to come and live there to work. This system is called Express Entry. Express Entry System manages the below-mentioned programs.

  • FSWP (Federal Skilled Worker Program);
  • FSTP (Federal Skilled Trades Program);
  • CEC (Canadian Experience Class)

You must qualify under specific economic immigration programs to apply for a Canadian PR through the Canada Express Entry System.

When someone applies for Express Entry to immigrate to Canada, their application is given a score called the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). This score is calculated based on various factors, such as their education, work experience, language proficiency, and other relevant factors.

To become a Permanent Resident in Canada, people must first apply for an invitation. This invitation is called an ITA. To qualify for an ITA, you need to meet certain requirements and have a score that shows you are a qualified candidate.

You can submit your application online and wait for an Express Entry draw. If your score matches the minimum score for the draw, you will be invited to apply for Permanent Residence. If you are not invited, you can try resubmitting your application. Keep in mind that your application is valid for one year.

When someone is invited to apply for Permanent Residency in Canada through the Express Entry point system, they have 60 days to submit their application to the government. If their application is approved, they become Permanent Residents of Canada and can live there for a lifetime.

Federal Express Entry lets eligible candidates apply for Canadian Immigration visas. Some Canadian provinces can also invite these candidates through a program called the Canada Provincial Nomination Program (PNP). There are different ways to apply for PNP, and one of them is to apply through a standalone stream or a stream aligned with Base PNP. It is important to note that an Express Entry-aligned stream differs from the other two.

If you want to immigrate to Canada but are worried about your CRS, you might be able to increase your chances by applying for a Provincial Nomination. To do this, you must be invited by any Provincial/Territorial under the PNP draws.

How do Base Provincial Nominee Programs (Base PNPs) work?

A base PNP is a type of immigration process that is different from General Canada Express Entry draws. Each province or territory manages it and has its own set of rules that people must follow to be eligible.

Under the Base Provincial Nominee Program, provincial and territorial governments can select qualified immigrants to move and settle in their region. This program helps local governments more effectively address their specific demographic and employment needs.

In Canada, each province and territory (except Quebec and Nunavut) has its own programs to welcome immigrants. These programs are called Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs). To be eligible for a PNP, you must have an active EOI application in the Express Entry pool and meet certain eligibility criteria. The specifics of what is required can differ depending on the program and the province.

The Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) is a particular government program that helps new people move to Canada and contribute to the economy. This year, it’s the second most popular way for newcomers to immigrate to Canada. The PNP aims to bring the benefits of immigration to different parts of the country. In the next few years, it’s expected to become the largest program for welcoming newcomers, surpassing all other ways of coming to Canada.
