Latest Express Entry Draw for Stem Occupations

Canada’s Immigration Refugees and Citizenship department has issued 4,050 invitations for people with skills in Science, Engineering, Technology, and Math (STEM) occupations to apply for permanent residency there.

This is the second time invitations have been sent out this week, and candidates were selected based on their qualifications and work experience in STEM fields. Under this draw, the minimum CRS cut-off was 491.

On April 10th, there was a draw for people who work in jobs related to Technology, Science, Engineering, and Math (STEM). This was the first draw of its kind this year. Later, another draw was held, inviting 1,280 people who scored at least 549 CRS points in the Express Entry Points System.

The government held its first selection process on January 10th, and only those who scored at least 546 points got selected. Since then, the Comprehensive Ranking System Criteria have decreased. The most recent selection process invited 1,980 people to apply for Permanent Residency on March 25th. This selection process required a CRS score of 524, which is lower than January 10th.

What is category-based selection?

In May 2023, Canada’s immigration department (IRCC) introduced a new way of selecting skilled workers through Express Entry based on high-demand skills or human capital attributes. The department created 6 different categories based on the types of skills that were in high demand in Canada.

They are:

  • A career in healthcare
  • STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) professions
  • Trade occupations like Carpenters, Plumbers, and Contractors
  • Occupation in Transportation
  • Occupations in Agriculture and Agri-food

Candidates must have an Express Entry application to be considered for category-based selection.

Candidates with French Proficiency are also preferred.

What is Express Entry?

Canada offers a streamlined online immigration process called Canada Express Entry for skilled workers interested in living and working here. In this system, applications are managed for three types of economic immigration programs: one for people with work experience (FSWP), one for people who have already worked in Canada (CEC), and one for people with trade-specific experience (FSTP).

A person who wants to move to another country and become a Permanent Resident is evaluated based on their work experience, job type, language skills, age, and education. All of these factors are scored, and the scores add up to get a final score.

The Canada Express Entry System is a faster way to apply for Permanent Residence than other immigration programs. In fact, the government aims to process 80% of all Express Entry applications within six months. However, if the application is more complex, the process may take a bit longer.
